The AJ Retrofit Awards revealed their shortlist today in the Higher Education category and we are delighted the Student Services Centre for the University of Cambridge is being recognised as one of the 6 projects in the Higher Education category. The winner will be announced mid-February and until then, we will keep our finger's crossed. Congratulations to the team who worked on the project!
Project Description:
'The use of the site has been greatly intensified by a combination of sensitive refurbishment, selective demolition and new construction. Whilst the former Art’s School has been imaginatively restored, a single storey exam hall was demolished to make way for the four-storey new building.
It was deemed not to have architectural merit apart from its doorway, which has been carefully removed and incorporated into the new building to mark its main entrance. Although the legacy of ad-hoc planning has been removed, the combination of new and refurbished buildings retains a sense of diversity, quirkiness and discovery, avoiding a homogeneous architectural form.'
