Last month, Alison Darvill, Associate Director at Bennetts Associates and project-lead of our project Timber Square joined a panel of experts in AJ's Fire Safety roundtable. The discussion chaired by AJ sustainability editor Hattie Hartman focussed on how designing for fire safety relates to environmental issues.
Our Bankside project Timber Square was a prime example where Alison deep-dived into how a design that includes a CLT extension, and a new 14-storey hybrid CLT and steel tower works in terms of fire safety.
"With CLT, obviously people are prone to think “Wood – fire – not good, but if you detail a steel, or a steel and concrete, or a concrete building badly, it’s going to burn anyway, so it’s about using the materials appropriately and detailing them well. CLT actually performs quite well in a fire because it chars – but it stays up."
