Basinghall Avenue is a substantial office building occupied by the Global Headquarters of Standard Chartered Bank. It occupies a prominent site close to the Guildhall.
The building seeks to unify the somewhat disparate scales of the immediate area and to enhance the public realm with a well proportioned and articulated architecture. The principle volume of the building is a simple 8-storey rectangular block with a 2-storey pavilion set back at levels eight and nine; to the west is an eight storey high rectangular bay window projecting proud of the stone clad frame. The bay is provided with a free-standing screen of vertical fins which marry a high degree of transparency to facilitate light entering the building with the perception of greater solidity when viewed obliquely.
The main entrance is in the centre of the long, northern façade on Basinghall Avenue, easily read by visitors. The ground and first floors are set back from the façade line above within a shallow arcade. Additionally the setting back allows the incorporation of glazed pavement lights within the boundary to provide natural light to the Lower Ground Level accommodation. Service access is provided discretely via Coleman Street into Whitehorse Yard.
