Bennetts Associates’ project for site Q2 at King’s Cross is a sports hall and gym for Camden Council. As the site sits directly above the tunnels leading out of King’s Cross Station, the sports hall is a low-rise, lightweight structure, using cross-laminated timber to create a series of long spans with mono-pitch roofs. Internally the timber panels are exposed to view; externally it is heavily insulated and then clad with standing seam black zinc. The angular profile of the roofs catches the eye from York Way and from the taller residential blocks nearby, all of which will look down on the building.
The building incorporates many passive design measures, using mixed-mode ventilation wherever possible, and optimises glazing to reduce heat gain whilst providing daylight. It also benefits from connection to the King's Cross Central district heating and cooling network which further improves the efficiency of the building.
It is intended that the sports hall will be used initially as a training and skills centre whilst the present centre’s site is redeveloped for housing.
