Working within the constraints of a site bordered by the town and River Lea, the challenge was to help the former Hertford Theatre grow to become BEAM, a larger, more versatile and welcoming venue. To achieve this, our design combined reuse with sensitive construction.
The existing auditorium was expanded and three new cinemas, a studio theatre and dance spaces were added in an array of volumes clad in local brick. The forms and materials of the new addition feel contemporary, while pitched roofs respond to the scale and character of the town.
“This is a once-in-a-generation building. A testament to the positive impact the arts can have on the economic and cultural welfare of our local and regional communities.”
