Fireworks Factory is the talisman for the Woolwich Works Creative District cultural complex. A former production hall for cartridges buttressed by two-storey wings that together form a courtyard layout, it is set within a group of listed buildings within the former Woolwich Arsenal.
The brief evolved as the economics of conversion, the potential of the different spaces and the public demand for events was fully understood. As a result, the completed complex contains a large performance venue in the main hall, with a combination of dance studios, artists workshops, cafés, spaces for rent and back-of-house in the smaller ranges around the perimeter.
Accommodating new uses for this historic industrial relic meant stripping back non-original and dilapidated accretions to reveal the majestic volumes of the Georgian wings and the expansive, multiple-bay manufacturing shed. New interventions and essential upgrading adopted a light architectural touch, sufficient to create a strong identity and support a wide range of arts-based functions.
Despite its multiple cast-iron columns, the hall has been engineered for 800 seated or 1200 standing, using flexible arrangements of staging, raked seating or flat floor.
As the beautiful original structure was extremely lightweight (in case of explosions), ingenuity was required not only to re-use the roof trusses and timber decking but also accommodate acoustic and thermal insulation, new glazing, fabric ductwork, lighting and services. The intention throughout has been to make the high-level additions almost invisible, with the enclosing walls and lobby making its new identity explicit.
