Hampstead Theatre was Bennetts Associates’ first cultural project, opening in 2003 as a highly adaptable home for new writing. The RIBA Award-winning building was designed to embody the theatre’s experimental spirit, with a flexible stage and auditorium that can transform with each production. Its sculptural form rises from a base of supporting spaces, anchoring the building within its Swiss Cottage setting and establishing a cultural landmark for the area.
Over time, our relationship with Hampstead Theatre has deepened through a series of carefully crafted internal adaptations. The foyer, reimagined in 2016, has become a bright and inclusive space that welcomes visitors throughout the day, inviting them to meet, work or pause between performances. Simple, durable materials extend the language of the original architecture, with warm walnut timber and integrated lighting bringing a sense of intimacy and character to the social heart of the building.
The main auditorium followed in 2019, with subtle spatial and material refinements that enhance comfort and accessibility while preserving the immediacy of the original design. Together, these interventions have strengthened the theatre’s connection with its community and ensured it remains a lively and generous place for audiences, artists and visitors alike.
