Completion
Located on the edge of Bath, Wessex Water’s headquarters set a national benchmark for environmental performance when completed. The building brings together the company’s operations in a single workplace that fosters collaboration, wellbeing and long-term efficiency.
Three naturally ventilated wings step down a steeply sloping site, connected by a glazed internal street that links communal spaces including the restaurant and meeting areas. Every workspace benefits from daylight and views across the surrounding landscape.
Environmental design principles were integrated from the outset: external shading varies by façade orientation, thermal mass moderates temperature, and local Bath stone grounds the building in its rural context. Alongside reduced energy demand, the project addressed embodied impacts, transport, waste and water reuse — a holistic approach rare for its time.
Decades after completion, the building continues to perform as intended, demonstrating that architecture rooted in environmental logic and social purpose remains both resilient and relevant.
“It is a best-case example of how all architects should have been thinking at the time, and in many ways, are still catching up.”
