Simon Erridge has played a defining role in shaping the practice’s work and reputation. His portfolio spans almost every sector, from culture, education, life sciences and workplaces to large-scale masterplans. If there’s a unifying principle, it’s a belief in the value of shared experience; designing buildings that belong to their communities and will therefore stand the test of time.
Over his more than thirty years with the practice, he has led some of our most celebrated cultural commissions. For example, the Stirling Prize-shortlisted Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Storyhouse in Chester, The Old Vic and Hampstead Theatre. His ongoing work on Tribeca and wider masterplanning in London’s Knowledge Quarter, as well as projects for the Royal Colleges, make tangible his belief in the capacity of architecture to positively influence civic life. Simon combines interest in the architecture of the past with a fascination for how we design with adaptability for the future. His deep understanding of heritage has guided the transformation of numerous listed buildings. He has led multidisciplinary research into the impact of net zero on the design of science buildings and, in the cultural sector, advises the Theatre Green Book initiative.
He combines creative leadership with a pragmatic, collaborative approach and has an influence beyond the practice. He regularly contributes to industry debate through speaking and writing, particularly around theatre design, culture and sustainability. Outside the practice, Simon has served on the board of St Martin-in-the-Fields and chairs their capital project group.
