Royal College of Pathologists Interiors

The new London headquarters for the Royal College of Pathologists brings together all aspects of the College’s work within a single flexible building in Aldgate. Designed to support its growing international membership and research programmes, the architecture and interiors were conceived as one, the structure itself forming the basis of the interior design.

Board-marked exposed concrete defines the tone throughout, with vertical fins and coffered soffits integrating lighting and services to create clarity, order and rhythm. This approach minimises applied finishes both as a sustainable strategy and as an expression of authenticity, allowing the building’s fabric to shape the atmosphere of each space.

In the more public areas the same brick used externally continues inside, giving warmth and civic character to the ground floor reception and gathering spaces. For the ceremonial rooms, rich walnut linings reference the College’s previous home at Carlton House Terrace, their depth and tone evoking the tradition and dignity of the institution while remaining firmly contemporary.
Furniture and fittings were selected to suit the building’s diverse users, from everyday staff to visiting members and the public, ensuring comfort, adaptability and a sense of belonging throughout. The result is an interior that balances robustness with refinement, echoing the College’s long-standing ethos of rigour, collaboration and care.
